FCC Chair: Fairness Doctrine Not Needed

FCC Chair: Fairness Doctrine Not Needed

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Communications Commission has no intention of reinstating the Fairness Doctrine imposing a requirement of balanced coverage of issues on public airwaves, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said.
Martin, in a letter written this week to Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., and made public Thursday, said the agency found no compelling reason to revisit its 1987 decision that enforcing the federal rule was not in the public interest.

That’s the best news I’ve heard in a while.
The last thing we need in this country is more stifling of our constitutional rights.

Linux: It’s Not Just for Servers Anymore

Linux: It’s Not Just for Servers Anymore

PORTLAND, Oregon — After years of being relegated to server racks and the desktops of ultrageeks, Linux is finally making some headway as a viable alternative to Windows on the consumer desktop.

This is something that I’ve known for years. I’m starting to get skeptical though, because every year since 1998 or so has been proclaimed the year linux breaks out.

U.S. must pay $101.7 million to men framed by FBI

U.S. must pay $101.7 million to men framed by FBI - CNN.com

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) — A federal judge Thursday ordered the government to pay more than $101 million in the case of four men who spent decades in prison for a 1965 murder they didn’t commit after the FBI withheld evidence of their innocence.

I’m absolutely appalled that the FBI would do this to these people. I guess it’s just another sign of how corrupt our federal government is.

Evidence of city beneath Alexandria

Evidence of city beneath Alexandria – Yahoo! News

CAIRO, Egypt – Alexander the Great founded Alexandria to immortalize his name amid his quest to conquer the world — but his was apparently not the first city on the famed site on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. A Smithsonian team has uncovered underwater evidence pointing to an urban settlement at the site dating back seven centuries before Alexander showed up in 331 B.C.

Political quickies

  • Apparently, only two of the republican candidates are willing to take part in the Republican Youtube debate. Of course, my man Ron Paul is one of them.
  • My friend Jared continues to make excellent political posts on his blog. I especially like this one.
  • The PA legislature has apparently refused to account for where the $360 million allotted to the party caucuses has been spent.
  • Ron Paul is doing very well monetarily. I think that’s a pretty good sign.
  • Here is a good article about whether Ron Paul helps or hurts the libertarian party.

Evangelical Girls Are Easy?

RealClearPolitics – Articles – ‘Evangelical Girls Are Easy’?

WASHINGTON – Recent books and studies seem to indicate disturbing sexual trends among evangelical Christians. And this time we’re not talking about their pastors or political leaders. The new attention is on evangelical teenagers, who reportedly start sex earlier than their mainline Protestant peers.

It’s been a while…

Andrea and I will be married exactly two weeks as of 4:15 or so this afternoon. Nothing really feels all that different, except for the fact that her car is always at my house now, along with her.

The wedding was awesome all around. I think we had one of the most interesting menus I’ve ever seen at a wedding, and we got nothing but compliments about it. The weather was perfect, the food and cake were awesome, Andy and Todd and their new lackey did fantastic DJing as always. I really have no complaints about anything at all.

The honeymoon at the beach was awesome. There are pictures up at the gallery. They are mostly of the view from our hotel room, and some awesome sunset pictures. There is some really great food at Ocean City, and everyone knows I’m all about that.

Andrea and I got a new laptop. It’s Awesome. It runs Vista, which is kind of meh, and I can’t seem to get the wireless card to work in linux. I’m going to wait and see what happens with Ubuntu 7.10 comes out. Hopefully that will be rectified by then.

Andrea went back to work today, so I’m back to my normal Saturday ritual of hanging out at Java Trails while she’s there. I like the couple of hours I get to hang out here every weekend.

Why Libertarians Should Celebrate Free Software

by Timothy B. Lee

In college I dated a left–of–center girl who liked to shop at the local grocery co–op rather than a commercial grocery store. We argued about it a lot. I’d point out the relative efficiencies of commercial grocery store organization. She’d stress fuzzier, more community–focused advantages: the sense of belonging, the superior treatment of workers, the closer connection between customers, employees, and management, and so on.

I still shop at a commercial grocery store. But I also think my criticism of the co–op was a little bit off base. There’s no reason that libertarians should object to shopping at a co–op. Some people simply believe that the intangible benefits of a less commercialized shopping experience are worth the costs. It’s a peaceful, voluntary form of social organization, and as long as no one is forced to shop there, there’s no reason libertarians should object.

Some libertarians seem to have developed a similar knee–jerk reaction against free software. Free software is produced through the cooperation of volunteers without anyone receiving exclusive rights in the finished product. This volunteerism has produced such widely used software as the Linux operating system, the Apache web server, and the Firefox web browser.
