Grand Theft Asshole

Grand Theft Asshole

We have spoken at length here about an emerging type of gameplay known as Asshole Physics. Max Payne 2 was one of the first games that featured a physics engine and we used it to knock over trash cans in a police station and annoy a secretary. Static NPCs, oblivious to our attempts at getting their attention, caused the experience to fall flat. But it was a start.

35 Fantastic HDR Pictures

35 Fantastic HDR Pictures | Monday Inspiration | Smashing Magazine

Applied carefully, High Dynamic Range-technique (HDR) can create incredibly beautiful pictures which blur our sense of the difference between reality and illusion. In graphics HDR imaging is a set of techniques that allow a far greater dynamic range of exposures than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows. This is usually achieved by modifying photos with image processing software for tone-mapping. And the results can be really incredible; in fact, many artists and designers come up with some pretty fancy results.

There are a lot of absolutely stunning pictures on that page.

New age nuclear

New age nuclear | COSMOS magazine

Nuclear energy produces no greenhouse gases, but it has many drawbacks. Now a radical new technology based on thorium promises what uranium never delivered: abundant, safe and clean energy – and a way to burn up old radioactive waste.

Indie labels bypass iTunes, give digital sales a shot

Indie labels bypass iTunes, give digital sales a shot

It’s easier than ever for bands to get their tunes where fans can buy them. Anyone with a computer, a guitar, and a microphone can now label him- or herself a “singer/songwriter,” churn out some songs, and have them available for sale across the US through online storefronts like Amie Street. What used to require a major-label recording contract can now be done for a few bucks and some mouse clicks. So why are some indie labels ditching the cheap and easy distribution channels and doing their own digital distribution?

What if… Windows went open source?

What if… Windows went open source?

When Microsoft talks about open source, people in the FOSS community tend to generally take it with a pinch – or more likely a kilo – of salt. Revealing the crown jewels of its empire – the Windows source code – has never ever been canvassed.

Duels

One of my current obsessions.

Duels

If you feel like signing up, please use that link. One of the quests involves getting new people to sign up, and I can’t get any further in the quest side of the game until I complete that quest.

100 of the Best (Useful) OpenSource Applications

100 of the Best (Useful) OpenSource Applications | Ubuntu Linux Help

The following is a list of about 100 of the best OpenSource Applications, that actually help make Linux more usable for people. It is my hope that this list shows potential Linux users that there really is a large, effective, productive and usable range of free, OpenSource applications. For existing Linux users (like myself), I think this will provide a great resource in finding applications that may better suit your needs, or just for fun! Needless to say, this is just some of the thousands of applications available! I develop web sites, so this list tends to focus on applications which support that type of work.

Back to Mepis

After trying a bunch of different Linux distros on my laptop, I’ve gone back to using Mepis, the pre-release version of 7.0 to be exact.
I used Mepis when it first came to being on my pc, and liked it alot, but ended up switching to Ubuntu when it first came around, then Linux Mint after that.

I’m still running Mint on my desktop, but Mepis works so much better for me on the laptop because it’s the only distro that I’ve found that can use the integrated wireless out of the box. I can get it to work in other distros, but it’s a pain to get it to.

Mepis looks good, works with all my hardware and runs really really fast. I’m the happiest I’ve been with Linux in a long time.

13 reasons why Linux should be on your desktop

A couple of years ago, the Linux desktop was a pimply adolescent with half-baked ideas. Today we see a handsome, well-dressed grown-up who handles a range of tasks with confidence and even performs fancy tricks. No longer need we make allowances for his dress sense or his strange habits.

Linux: It’s Not Just for Servers Anymore

Linux: It’s Not Just for Servers Anymore

PORTLAND, Oregon — After years of being relegated to server racks and the desktops of ultrageeks, Linux is finally making some headway as a viable alternative to Windows on the consumer desktop.

This is something that I’ve known for years. I’m starting to get skeptical though, because every year since 1998 or so has been proclaimed the year linux breaks out.

It’s been a while…

Andrea and I will be married exactly two weeks as of 4:15 or so this afternoon. Nothing really feels all that different, except for the fact that her car is always at my house now, along with her.

The wedding was awesome all around. I think we had one of the most interesting menus I’ve ever seen at a wedding, and we got nothing but compliments about it. The weather was perfect, the food and cake were awesome, Andy and Todd and their new lackey did fantastic DJing as always. I really have no complaints about anything at all.

The honeymoon at the beach was awesome. There are pictures up at the gallery. They are mostly of the view from our hotel room, and some awesome sunset pictures. There is some really great food at Ocean City, and everyone knows I’m all about that.

Andrea and I got a new laptop. It’s Awesome. It runs Vista, which is kind of meh, and I can’t seem to get the wireless card to work in linux. I’m going to wait and see what happens with Ubuntu 7.10 comes out. Hopefully that will be rectified by then.

Andrea went back to work today, so I’m back to my normal Saturday ritual of hanging out at Java Trails while she’s there. I like the couple of hours I get to hang out here every weekend.

Why Libertarians Should Celebrate Free Software

by Timothy B. Lee

In college I dated a left–of–center girl who liked to shop at the local grocery co–op rather than a commercial grocery store. We argued about it a lot. I’d point out the relative efficiencies of commercial grocery store organization. She’d stress fuzzier, more community–focused advantages: the sense of belonging, the superior treatment of workers, the closer connection between customers, employees, and management, and so on.

I still shop at a commercial grocery store. But I also think my criticism of the co–op was a little bit off base. There’s no reason that libertarians should object to shopping at a co–op. Some people simply believe that the intangible benefits of a less commercialized shopping experience are worth the costs. It’s a peaceful, voluntary form of social organization, and as long as no one is forced to shop there, there’s no reason libertarians should object.

Some libertarians seem to have developed a similar knee–jerk reaction against free software. Free software is produced through the cooperation of volunteers without anyone receiving exclusive rights in the finished product. This volunteerism has produced such widely used software as the Linux operating system, the Apache web server, and the Firefox web browser.

I got a new cellphone

It’s pretty awesome. I’ve never had a flip phone before, so it’s taking me a while to get used to it.

Nokia 6133

I finally have a phone that will work properly with picture messages, so everybody who has my number can now send me obscene pictures.

I’m such a gadget junkie

The weekend is almost here…

So, new guy is within a couple of hours of finishing his first week, and I have no doubt that he’s going to do well. That’s a damn good thing for me, because it means that I will get to my daylight job faster. I never thought I’d be so gung-ho about moving to daylight.

If anyone has a spare couple hundred dollars laying around, feel free to buy me one of these or one of these.
